Ruth (Jackie) Calmbacher, 81, peacefully passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2018 in Virginia Beach VA. Ruth was a long time resident of Wheeling, WV. Ruth was dedicated to her 30 year career with United Way, starting as an Associate Director eventually retiring as an Executive Director.
Jackie was not only a grandmother, lovingly referred to as Mema, to Erika, Zachary, and Amanda but also their best friend. Mema Jackie loved reading and puzzles and was known for her quick wit and intelligence. As young girls, Amanda and Erika would play dress up in her “ workie clothes”, trying their best to emulate their cherished matriarch. She was a woman to be admired and yet her presence was striking, for she was tall with glacial blue eyes. Her kindness to her friends and family was immeasurable. One of her favorite pastimes was fishing with her brother Spike, who she adored. Spike and Jackie had a strong bond growing up that lasted long into their adult lives. Jackie was also a mentor to many, not just her children and grandchildren. In her 30 years at United Way she made many friends who relied on her warmth and understanding in trying times. Jackie was a mother, a grandmother and a life long friend to those that came into her world.
She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Eberhardt, son, Paul Calmbacher, Grandchildren, Erika Wilson, Amanda and Nathan Jackson, Zachary Eberhardt and Alyson Phillips. She is Predeceased by her beloved Robert Mckinny, Wheeling WV, and her brother, James (Spike) Boyle, Mogadore, Ohio.
The memorial service will be held Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 2pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1801 Baltic Ave., Va. Beach, VA 23451. In Lieu of flowers, please donate to the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley.
