Althea Lydia "Dottie" Kepley

NEWPORT NEWS – Althea “Dottie” Lydia Kepley passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loved ones, on August 10, 2017. She was born in Pennsylvania, but was a resident of Newport News, VA for over 30 years. Althea was educated in Pennsylvania and graduated from the Pittsburgh Academy Business College and studied tailoring at Rutgers University while living at Fort Monmouth, N.J. During her husband’s military career, she traveled extensively in Europe and the United States. She also enjoyed the volunteer work she participated in at the hospitals, Bloodmobile, Red Cross (Grey Lady), Boy and Girl Scout activities, Sunday school teacher and Chapel Children’s Programs. Althea retired from Fort Eustis, where she worked at the U.S. Army Training Support Center, TRADOC. After her retirement, she worked with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program in Newport News, McDonald Army Hospital, Mary Immaculate Hospital and Jenkins Elementary School. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, knitting, reading and listening to music. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women’s Circle and Denbigh United Presbyterian Church. Althea was preceded in death by her husband, Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Rodney S. Kepley. She is survived by her three children, Dr. David R. Kepley and his wife, Brenda of Annadale, Va., Diane A. Kepley of Mount Airy, Md. and Donald F. Kepley and his wife, Melissa of Newport News. She is also survived by her two grandchildren, Andrew D. Kepley and Patrick J. Kepley and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, August 13, 2017 at Altmeyer Funeral Home-Denbigh Chapel, 12893 Jefferson Ave., Newport News. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, August 14, 2017 in Peninsula Memorial Park, officiated by Rev. Dr. Michael T. Condrey. The family would like to recognize the care and compassion provided by all at Home Instead Senior Care. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Althea’s name to a favorite charity.
