Dr. Gary Groot Bluemink (79) of Norfolk, Va., passed away at home on November 3, 2017. Gary was born March 15, 1938, in Racine, Wisc., to Eleanor and Gary Groot Bluemink. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Donna Elizabeth Groot Bluemink; daughters Elizabeth Cannon (Eric), Rachel Hendricks (Trent), and Johanna Groot Bluemink; son Gerrit Groot Bluemink; sisters Mary Ellen Miller (Donald) and Julie Jacobsen (Robert) and six grandchildren.
Gary was an associate professor of pathology at Eastern Virginia Medical School until his retirement, and was affiliated with Norfolk General Hospital. Since the mid-1990s, he has been a medical examiner and pathologist contracted by private clients. He was known throughout Virginia for his compassion and exemplary service to bereaved families.
Gary served in the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army Medical Corps after obtaining a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and Doctor of Medicine from Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, Ill. His Army medical service took him to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, Fort Bliss, and Fort Eustis.
Family and friends will gather on Tuesday, November 7, at Altmeyer Funeral Home’s chapel at 5792 Greenwich Road. A private burial is planned at Blooming Glen Mennonite Church, in Blooming Glen, Penn.
