Ethel Sturdivant Reese was born on October 11, 1930 to the late Lester and Ethel Sturdivant of Wadesboro, North Carolina. Ethel was the third child of the ten Sturdivant children. She attended Anson County Public Schools. After completing her education, she relocated to Washington, DC and briefly worked as a waitress. Later, her love for children guided her to take a job working as a Nanny.
Ethel met the love of her life, John Wesley Reese, in Washington DC. Friendship began to blossom and so did their love. They were united in holy matrimony on September 8, 1950. To this union, seven daughters and one son were born: Belinda, Roxanne, John, Deborah, Michelle, Maria, Angela, and Amy.
Ethel was a devoted wife and mother who was cherished by her family and all who met her. She had a love of gardening, a gift of playing the piano by ear, a comedian’s sense of humor, and a hearty laugh that was contagious. She had an exceptional memory for remembering the birthdates of relatives and friends and often surprised them with a birthday greeting.
On Friday, June 9, 2017, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, called her home. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, husband John Wesley Reese, son John Lester Reese, daughter Angela Catherine Reese, siblings Lillie Mae, Hazel, Ruby, William “Osborne,” Lester, and Edward.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Belinda Forte (Johnny), Roxanne Reese, Deborah Ross (Anthony), Michelle Biggins (Brian), Maria Artis (Tony), Amy Reese-Johnson; sisters Rose Young (Charles), Helen McLendon (Vernie), Kathy Butler; grandchildren Nykisha Dixon, Kaliq Campbell, Lindsay Campbell, Anthony Ross, Jr., Andrey Ross, Ketu’rah Biggins, Elijah Biggins, Jeremiah Biggins, Walter C. Washington, III (Kathrin), Christina Peterson (Nathan), Aaron McCown, and Angel Johnson; great-grandchildren Troy Dixon, Ty Dixon, Sky Campbell, Shyheim Campbell, Jazlyn Washington, Mia Washington, Peyton Peterson, Walter C. Washington, IV. Survived also by many other relatives and friends.
