Memorial

On April 9, 2018, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Eugene Clarence James crossed the bar into eternal rest.
His life began on February 14, 1946, the son of the late Edgar James, and Geraldine Cotman James-Reid.
After completion of his education in the Williamsburg James City County School System, Eugene chose to enter the US Army. While serving in Viet Nam he was severely wounded, ending what he thought would be an extended career. Eugene especially enjoyed being a paratrooper.
After receiving a purple heart and several other medals, he was eventually able to return home where he was joined in holy matrimony to Willnette “Cookie” James. This union resulted in a son Anthony, daughter Enjolie, daughter-in-law Keiko, and 6 grandchildren, Adayna, Naimah, Asaad, Amuro, Victorious and Kamiyu.
Eugene became a graduate of Calvary Bible College, and developed a passion for street evangelism. He was especially known for greeting people at the 7-11 stores and sharing the message of salvation. His church, World Outreach Worship Center was a place of joy for him. He especially enjoyed the “meet and great” portion of the service, sharing encouragement with those he encountered.
To remember Eugene, is to remember his love of the Dallas Cowboys, and his love of family. For many young people in the community, he was affectionately known as “Uncle Gene”.
In addition to his wife of 46 years, his children and grandchildren, he leaves to cherish his memories, his brothers Harris James (Barbara) and Floyd James, sisters, Thelma Robinson, Melvina Banks (Major), Corlis Lightfoot (David), Janette Fulton, and a host of other loving relatives and caring friends.
Viewing will be on Sat. April 14th 3-5pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 12893 Jefferson Ave., Newport News, VA.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30am on Monday April 16th, at World Outreach Worship Center, 1233 Shields Road, Newport News, VA, with Interment at 2pm at Albert Horton, Jr Veterans Cemetery.
In support of the James Family’s non-profit outreach to missions, please consider in lieu of flowers, a contribution to Tree of Life International, PO Box 6264 Williamsburg, VA 23188. www.hopeoftroli.org

Hi, I just learned that Clarence had died. He was in a different platoon then me, I was in the 3rd platoon. Yes, he was a very good and proud Blk soldier, I wish I could have had time with him. We all lost contact with one another, I isolated for many years fighting the battles in my head, till I mate the Lord. My prayers are with all of you. A Currahee Brother

I am so sorry for your loss. I was one of Eugene’s platoon leaders in Vietnam. He was a great soldier, and a great man. I wish we had been able to reconnect. Please stay safe.
