George E. Bates
Virginia Beach – George Edward Bates 78, of Virginia Beach, VA passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at his residence in Virginia Beach, VA. He was born October 4, 1938. He served on a tour of duty in the United States Navy on the USS GYATT DDG 1. He was retired from the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority.
He is preceded in death by his son, Scott Bates Sr,
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Barbara A. Bates, two sons, Edward Bates and Stephen Bates, daughter, Lori Mangan and son-in-law, Scott Mangan. Five grandchildren, Calvin Bates, Hunter Bates, Nichole Speckine, Scott Bates Jr and Zachary Bates; two sisters, Bernice Bates, Beatrice Bates and several nieces and nephews.
George is a member of the Woodland Heights Baptist Church in Chesapeake, VA.
Visitation will be Tuesday, June 20 at Altmeyer Funeral Home-Southside Chapel located 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach from 6-8pm, with a funeral service the following day at the same location , Wednesday, June 21 at 10am and will be conducted by Pastor Kenneth Barnes. Burial will follow at the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Woodland Heights Baptist Church.

To my dear friend Barbara,
You are in my thoughts and prayers during your time of loss, the love you and Mr George had for each other was seen and felt each time I had the opportunity to be at your house and the love you both had for the LORD was evident in both of you. Please be assured you WILL see Mr George one day, you have GOD’S promise of that!! I will continue to pray for you and your family and I love you!!
