Norfolk – Gladys Brown Huffman, 90, passed away peacefully in Chesapeake on April 30, 2016. Mrs. Huffman was born to the late David L. and Mary McBride Brown. Mrs. Huffman was predeceased by her husband, Robert L. Huffman, Sr. and two children, Claude C. Huffman and Melodie Huffman Joseph.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Kandie Law Rice of Jacksonville, Florida, Robert “Bobby” Huffman, Jr. of Norfolk, Kay Huffman Turner of Ponte Vedra, Florida and Captain David Huffman of Chesapeake; siblings, Kathleen Bagley of NY and Margaret Nash of MO; 16 grandchildren and 10 great grand children; numerous sons and daughter in laws, “adopted” children and cherished neighbors Dino and Barbara Spencer and Barbara Byars.
As a young girl during World War II, she worked on the Naval Base assisting the paymaster and volunteered at the USO. She was a member of Talbot Park Baptist Church and spent many years working in the nursery. She was always energetic in her children’s schools. She had been active in the Crossroads Lions Club with her husband. For many years, she ran a successful children’s clothing store with her eldest daughter named The Children’s Caravan in VA Beach.
She was married to “Bob” Huffman on December 1, 1946 after his return home from naval service in the South Pacific. They raised 6 children, 4 of whom would become Norfolk Police Officers. She was a very proud American and very proud to be the mother of so many police officers despite the worry it often brought her. Her holiday tables were always packed with family, friends and police officers.
A special thank you to Dr. David Palmisano and Danielle, her doctor and nurse, and her “adopted” daughter Tanya Blackwell who was her personal caregiver for the last year of her life.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Chesapeake. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday at 12 noon at the same location with Pastor Chris Amos officiating. Any law enforcement officer/military personnel in attendance are requested to wear their uniform as she loved that so much. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.altmeyerfh.com.
