Portsmouth- Jane Leah Leighton, 68, peacefully transcended into the arms of her Savior on December 4, 2016. She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank Lockett and Frances Christine Leighton, as well as her brother, James Neil Leighton.
Jane graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and continued her education by graduating from Old Dominion University with a degree in Psychology specializing in employee-employer relations. She was employed by the Virginia State Police Department and later was employed by the City of Portsmouth-Police Department retiring in 2003 after 32 years of service. Most recently, Jane was employed by Acosta Military Division serving our Military families over the last 8 years as a Business Manager Assistant.
Jane greatly loved the Lord and would go to any length to share His word with any and everyone she met. She also enjoyed camping and cooking on an open wood fire, touring and sight-seeing our great nation and all of it’s beauty and history. She was particularly fond of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. Jane had a great love of all animals, even giving the squirrels and other wild animals in her yard names and taking time to feed them every day no matter what. She loved anything to do with computers and all things mechanical.
Jane is survived by her best friend of 58 wonderful years, Imelda Greene; her niece Rebecca Childers (John); two great nieces, and one great nephew all of Lexington, KY; her cousin, Stephen Haywood of Gloucester, VA. and many other friends.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 10 from 2-3PM followed by a funeral service at 3PM in Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5782 Greenwich Road, VA Beach. A reception will follow the service. Per Jane’s request, her cremains will be laid to rest in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
Jane’s last inspiring words to all of her friends were to love and serve the Lord with all your heart.

My heart felt condolences go out to Ms. Jane’s family and friends who loved her, I remember the first time I met MS Jane when we where introduced to each other she greeted me as if I was a long lost friend and she always greeted that way every time we met at her building when I would deliver the mail and I will miss her humorous e:mails that she would send that cheer my day up. To my friend I love you and will miss you dearly.

Miss Jane was a beautiful light. She was a blessing to me. I only got to know her in the last few weeks but she touched my heart. I can only hope that I helped make her time in the hospital a bit brighter since taking care of her brightened my day.
