Jane McKown Fuchs, 65, passed away June 27, 2016. Born in Virginia Beach, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Betty Harrell McKown. She graduated from Princess Anne High School in 1968 and subsequently from East Carolina University in 1972 with her Bachelor’s degree. Jane was very proud of her local heritage and believed in her community. She served as a social worker in the City of Norfolk for 4 years before making the decision to stay home with her children. Jane always, proudly put her family first. Love for family is one of her defining qualities and that love was only amplified as she became a grandmother. Jane was truly an idealist, believing that people are inherently good and have what it takes to make the world a better place. She saw beauty in life and, as a lifelong learner, loved traveling and reading to gain new perspective and experience. She was an intellectual who adored reading; often, she would stay up well into the night reading or chatting with friends and family. Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 43 years, Robert Fuchs; sons, Barry Fuchs and his wife Lauren Kisser, and Tim Fuchs and his wife Alice Ashe; grandchildren, Spencer and Daphne Fuchs, and Emmett Fuchs; brother, Darrell McKown and his wife Sarah; sister, Susan Fowlkes and her husband Meade; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family members all over tidewater and beyond. A memorial to celebrate her life will be held Tuesday, July 5th, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Norfolk Botanical Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the thehealthwagon.org. Condolences can be made at www.altmeyerfh.com.

We were so sad to discover Jane’s obituary in the newspaper. Don and I were in your very first Lamaze class when you were expecting Barry and we were expecting Robyn. We shared so many new-mom thoughts and feelings! Jane and I spent many hours after the babies were born visiting each other so the babies could play together as they grew and there were even times when the four adults could visit in the evening and talk about –what else–babies! I still have the recipe for “Jane’s Cheese Ball” in my recipe box from one of those evenings. Don and I were so sorry when you moved to Northern Virginia but we looked forward each Christmas to receiving Jane’s signature little Christmas card with a handwritten note catching us up on events in the life of the Fuchs family. It was exciting to read in the last card we received that you were moving back to the area but we worried when we didn’t receive a card this past Christmas. We had no way of contacting you as we waiting through December and into January for the card that never came. We are so sorry. We knew Jane as a joyful, loving, dedicated mom and wife. She will be greatly missed.

The only way I can see her in my mind is smiling and laughing. She had a huge heart and lifted up the people around her.

My sincerest condolences to the Fuchs family. May you find comfort and peace in the precious memories of your wife, mother, sister, and grandmother, and by trusting and relying on the God of all comfort (Psalm 83:18) who is close to the broken-hearted, saving those who are crushed in spirit.

I’m so sorry to hear about Jane’s passing! I only knew her from facebook and that we shared a love for Chic’s Beach. Both of us had spent lots of time there as kids, my aunt and uncle had a summer cottage there (built by Sheriff Marr – whom she apparently knew) and she was responsible for letting me know about a video that showed ‘Chic’s’ in the background and she knew from one of my posts that I wanted to do a painting of the place. I was recovering from cancer surgery at the time, and really enjoyed sharing her memories of a place that meant so much to both of us…..
