John Richard "Jack" Wheelbarger

John R. “Jack” Wheelbarger, 78, died peacefully on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.  He was born in Norfolk County, on September 7, 1938 to the late Calvin Joseph Wheelbarger and Margaret Breidenour Wheelbarger.  Jack lived the majority of his life in the Portlock area.  He was employed for 35 years with Ogden Foods before starting his Wheelbargers Repair Service in 1991.  Working was his hobby and he continued to work as long as he was able;   Jack was often referred to as the “Vending Machine Repair Man”.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Sharon Wheelbarger Carey; siblings, Marion Moution, Carolyn Clemmons and Calvin, Dale, and Carlton Wheelbarger.

Jack was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Ellen LaVerne Marslender  Wheelbarger; two sons, Richy Wheelbarger and Drew Wheelbarger, both of Chesapeake; grandchildren, Brandon Carey (Hannah) of Suffolk, Seth, Ella, Haley, and Summer Wheelbarger, all of Chesapeake; and siblings, JoAnn Francis of MD, Billy Wheelbarger and Grace Tyson of Chesapeake; brother-in-laws, Marshall and Charlie Marslender of Belhaven, NC; and Janet Martin Kodman, who was like a daughter.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:00pm until 7:00pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd, Chesapeake.  A life celebration service will immediately follow with Rev. Amos Eby officiating.  Memorial donations may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.   Express condolences to the family at www.altmeyerfh.com.
