Luther Richardson, born on June 16, 1937 to the late Earl and Edna of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away peacefully during the early morning hours on Sunday, April 8, 2018, surrounded by family at home. He served his country honorably in the Air Force, stationed in Burtonwood, Warrington, England, where he met his sweetheart, Patricia from Liverpool, swept her off her feet to Wiesbaden, Germany and later, settling in the Hampton Roads area and raising a family with her. He was later stationed at Langley Air Force Base, and hearing US Astronaut Alan Shepard’s weather summary from his Mercury capsule 90 miles from earth, was the first weatherman to ever relay a report across the country that originated from space. His interest in aeronautics and space led him to begin a successful 35 year career with NASA. He was an avid storyteller with a sharp memory for details, known to illustrate his stories with any available napkin and his pen from his front shirt pocket. He was a devoted family man, who never met a stranger, loved to travel, ride roller coasters, listen to classical music, drink coffee and read his newspaper. He enjoyed our annual trip to the beach every summer, and would begin stockpiling supplies in anticipation months in advance! The birds, squirrels and rabbits out back will miss him and his peanuts which he patiently shelled while watching sports on the TV.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his dear wife of 59 years, Patricia and their three daughters, Gaynor Flynn (Peter) of Chesapeake Beach, MD; Janine Carneal (Mark) of Newport News, VA; Jillian Bales (Thom) of San Francisco, CA; and his six grandchildren, Trevor, Meghan, Colin, Talbot, Morgan and Emmy; two step-grandchildren, Anastasia and Victoria; his brother Glen Richardson(Drema); and sister Kona Gentry and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
The Memorial Service will be held 3 p.m. Friday, April 20, 2018 in the Denbigh Chapel of the Altmeyer Funeral Home on Jefferson Avenue followed by time to visit with the family after the service.
