Mary Louise Whitmore, 91, was called home by Our Lord on October 11, 2015. Born in Greenville, S.C., Mary was the daughter of the late Clerence and Muriel Butler. In pursuit of employment in the metal industry, her family including eleven brothers and sisters, moved to Portsmouth. Working at the end of World War II for Ames and Brownley, she watched as a young man walked into the store and she looked at the person she was working with and said, “I am going to marry that man!” That man, William T. Whitmore, did become her husband, and they were married for sixty wonderful and blessed years before William was called Home by Our Lord in September of 2006.
Mary is survived by her two sons, William T. Whitmore, Jr. and his wife Cheryl B. Whitmore and Warren A. Whitmore and his wife Aixa M. Whitmore; daughter-in-law Sharon B. Whitmore, all of Virginia Beach; eleven grandchildren; 17, soon to be 18, great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Margaret Sinclair, and countless nieces and nephews.
Mary will always be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, sister, aunt, and very generous friend. Mary loved her Lord all of her life and she was a children’s Sunday School teacher as well as a Vacation Bible School teacher and a babysitter. She has touched many hundreds of lives. Her impact will be felt for many generations to come.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at King’s Grant Baptist Church (873 Little Neck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23452) on Saturday, October 31, 2015, at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Skip Wallace officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Virginia Beach Beacon Baptist Church (2301 Newstead Dr. Virginia Beach, VA 23454) or King’s Grant Baptist Church.
The Altmeyer Funeral Home-Southside Chapel is assisting the family. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.altmeyerfh.com.
