Mary Ruth Davis

July 10, 1933 - June 9, 2018

Mary “Ruth” Davis, 84, went to her heavenly home on Saturday evening, June 9, 2018. She died from a very quick, aggressive cancer. Ruth was born on July 10, 1933, in Nashville, TN. She married Challie S. Davis, Jr. on August 5, 1949, and lived in North Carolina; Chicago, Illinois; Hermitage, Tennessee; and finally Hampton, Virginia. She was a stay-at-home mom until her children were in junior high school. She worked for the Hampton City Schools in the cafeteria. She later joined the Hampton Sheriff’s Department and served from 1977 to 1997, working with former Sheriffs Alvin Law and Charles Michaels before retiring during the term of current Sheriff B.J. Roberts.

Ruth has been active in ministry in the Church of the Nazarene in Hampton, VA, and Donelson Church of the Nazarene in Nashville. She taught cradle roll for infants and her family was active in every ministry available. She also taught Sunday School, Junior Fellowship, Children’s Quizzing, and was a Vacation Bible School Teacher and Director. She ran an active visitation bus ministry with her husband “Slim” Davis until his death in 1973.

She continued in ministry. Her love for children and their families, as well as her husband’s, was modeled to daughters Deborah and Cathy, who have continued in childrens’ ministry whenever possible. Ruth attended the Hampton Church of the Nazarene for many years. Later she attended the Donelson Church of the Nazarene in Nashville, TN, and the Bibleway Fellowship Church in York County, VA. She loved the Lord, family, and her church. She supported the missionary program anywhere she attended and taught her daughters to do likewise. We miss her but she has heard those words, “Welcome home, my faithful child, a good and faithful servant.”

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, Edwin Thomas Miller and Lorena Rudolph Miller; brothers, Edwin “Thomas” Miller, Jr., and Charles “Rudolph” Miller, and sister, Elizabeth Ann Reynolds; as well as an infant daughter.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Deborah A. Davis of Hampton, VA, and Cathy R. Davis of Franklin, TN, along with her daughters of the heart, Laura K. Gootee and Deborah S. Gootee, both of Franklin, TN.

Additional survivors include nephews and nieces Joe Davis (Janice) of Bladenboro, NC; Charles Davis (Laura) of Dublin, NC; Jane Davis Brooks (Charlie), Judy Davis, both of Smithfield, VA; Jackie Davis Wilgus of Gloucester, VA; Lanelle Johnson, Mike Johnson, Lawrence Johnson (Joanne), all of Carrollton, VA; Terry Miller Baxter (Mark), of Hendersonville, TN; Karen Miller Wilkenson (Paul) of Bowling Green, KY; Chuck Miller, Jr. (Maria), of Westmoreland, TN; and Kelly Miller Guy (David) of Hendersonville, TN. She also has several great nieces and nephews she also loved very much. She was blessed by the love of so many family members and friends.

We know this isn’t the end but the beginning of her life with Jesus and our Daddy and sister and all her family and friends already there.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages a donation of a Gideon Bible in the name of Ruth Davis.
