Melvin Lee Simms

Melvin Lee Simms, 93, passed away May 8, 2016. He was born in Dime, Louisiana to the late Helon and Alvin Simms. He is also preceded in death by his daughter, Anne Ball.

Melvin attended Maury High School, Concordia Seminary and William and Mary Norfolk Division prior to his military service in the US Navy. He worked with his father at A.C. Simms and Son Inc. in Norfolk after World War II. Melvin was a long-term member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Norfolk; he was also one of the founders of Camp Civitan, which is now a part of Eggleston Services.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 72 years, Dorothy V. Simms; son, Clifford Simms (Leigh); daughter, Jane Smith (Randy); son-in-law, Richard Ball (Flo); grandchildren, Michelle, Rick, Allison, Ryan, Tiffany, and Shannon; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Sunday, May 15, 2016 from 3-5PM at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Southside Chapel 5792 Greenwich Rd., Virginia Beach. A memorial service will be held Monday, May 16, 2016 at 11AM at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6001 Granby St., Norfolk. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Camp Civitan-Eggleston Services at www.egglestonservices.org. Condolences may be expressed at www.altmeyerfh.com.
