Phyllis "Claire" Miller

February 27, 1929 - October 17, 2017

Phyllis Miller, 88, passed away Tuesday, 17 October 2017 in Norfolk, Virginia surrounded by her loving husband and family. Claire, as she preferred to be called, was born 27 February 1929 to Frank and Mary Merkel in Tiltonsville, Ohio. She was a graduate of Tiltonsville High School and Ohio University where she met the love of her life, Bob Miller. After graduation in 1952 and re-locating to Virginia, Bob and Claire began their 65 year love affair while building their family and business. Claire’s family was everything to her as she and Bob raised two boys, Mitch and Matt. Her other great joy in life was serving as an elementary school teacher for thirty four years in addition to traveling around the U.S.
Claire was pre-deceased by her parents and two brothers, Frank and Robert. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Bob; two sons, Mitch and his wife Mary and Matt and his wife Tamara; four grandchildren, Megan, Brooke, Kaitlyn and Brandon; sister, Marilyn; and brother, Jim along with a host of relatives and friends.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, 19 October 2017 at 1:00 pm at Horton National Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or just hug your kids and enjoy your precious time with family and friends.
