Robert “Rob” Claude Tanner, II (52) of Virginia Beach, died peacefully in Sentara Norfolk Heart Hospital on April 9, 2018 after giving his loving family and countless friends the chance to bid him final farewells and embraces.

Rob was preceded in death by his grandparents Robert C. Tanner, Emma Tanner, Herbert E. Storer, and Evelyn Storer, all of Stockton, NY; and father James R. Tanner.

He was born in Dunkirk, New York to James R. Tanner and Anna May Storer Tanner.  As part of an honorable Navy family, Rob moved to Virginia Beach when his dad was stationed at NAS Oceana.  Rob is a graduate of First Colonial High School and Old Dominion University.

Rob lived a full life and was a well-loved gregarious man.  He loved God, his family, friends, the great outdoors, all sports and was the NFL Eagles biggest fan.  There was never a stranger who crossed his path and he was a well-known favorite server at the Lynnhaven Fish House for many years.

Left to “believe” and continue memories with his spirit in mind are his mother Anna May Tanner; sister Sarah L. Tanner (David Vigil); nephews Preston C. Tanner, Parker B. Tanner-Vigil, and Pryce “Jack” Tanner-Vigil; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends extending from coast to coast.

A memorial service to celebrate Rob’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at Spring Branch Community Church (1500 N Great Neck Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23454) at 11:00 AM.  The Altmeyer Funeral Home-Southside Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. RIP dear Rob. The number of people who love and will miss you is a testament to the life you lived. I will never forget all the “Wadsworth guys”. Laying all over my living room floor playing Battleship. I also will never forget you being at my house and saying “Mrs. Davis, a fly just landed in your coffee cup”. With that big smile you ask if I was going to drink it. I said “No, but I’ll give you 5 dollars to drink it.” You kept smiling and with all the encouragement from the other boys you said “Okay, I’ll do it.” Needless to say I lost 5 dollars. There’s so many good memories we have of those 11 years spent in Wadsworth. We love you and will miss you so much. RIP with the Lord until we meet again.

“Hopewell” here aka Fuzy and VA-Nessa- you had a few names for me never one that offended me… there are few people I have met in my life that make a lasting impact… you have to be very special. I am so happy and proud to name you as one of the few. If your mere size wasn’t enough to make one take notice it was your warm and welcome nature, your laughter, kindness, sincerity and sense of humor… my heart will ache for a long while for the worlds loss of such a beautiful soul. I wish I knew you longer or had more memories, it makes the one I have of you even more cherished. We only knew each other thru LFH and I worked there for almost 2 yrs. but it was enough – our lives will be a little emptier the world a little smaller and our hearts will hurt a while longer – I miss you and will for a long while – Love you, “Hopewell”
