Robert Lee Harvey Sr. of Virginia Beach passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 7, 2017.  Mr. Harvey was born in Jodie, West Virginia on December 11, 1939 and joined the Navy shortly after high school.  He proudly served with the United States Naval Construction Battalions, better known as the Seabees, for 20 years.  Joining the military allowed Mr. Harvey to travel to many places not only in the United States but around the world.  He was stationed in California, Florida, Japan, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Guam, Diego Garcia, Cuba, Nakhon, Thailand, Laos, Okinawa, and finally Virginia.  He retired from the military in 1981.  He continued to work with the federal government as a civil servant in Norfolk, VA before retiring permanently in 2014.

Mr. Harvey was a talented musician and was awarded first chair in trumpet in the state of West Virginia during his senior year in high school.  He was a naturally gifted athlete.  In his youth, he was an amateur boxer, and while stationed in Japan, he played minor league baseball.  At heart, he was a boy from the country who had a soft spot for dogs and a love of the outdoors.  All these traits he passed on to his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Harvey was a devoted father, grandfather and friend.  Surviving family members include his son Robert, daughter Lisa, daughter-in-law Virginia, grandsons Noah and Jonah, sister Jean Ratliff and brother Fred Kitchen.  Surviving friends include Katsuko and Marvin Mahoney, Missy Mahoney, Roy Dodds, Alex Davis and Ava Davis.

Mr. Harvey’s services will be held at Bayside Church of Christ (5025 Shell Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23455) on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at 11:00am followed by interment at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA at 1:00pm.

Not many people were aware that Robert and I dated for nearly a year. We didn’t want anyone to know our personal business so we talked about it and just decided to keep it to ourselves. I’d like like to say a few things about Robert that I came to know and loved about him…He was the best man I’d ever dated. That is for sure. No one was closer. He was a real gentleman and a wonderful best friend and old fashioned gentleman and we took good care of each other. We talked every day or most days on the phone and when we were coworkers Robert would make it a point to come see me in my office and tell me “he had to come and say hello to the prettiest girl in Ops or Rental Lease” (whichever dept. I was in at the time). We would talk about 15 min then he’d go to work and I’d do the same. We had a “Love and understanding” for each other that surpassed many other relationships and he was very good to me and we’d made many plans for our future to do things we both liked. Robert was a very hard worker who never complained about anything he was told to do. He’d tell me about his grandsons and daughter Lisa and how very proud of them he was. I know my ❤️ heart was torn apart when Robert’s son told me he’d passed away. I cried my heart out for days and still do. I miss you so much Robert and I will never ever forget the gentleman you were! REST IN PEACE you’re where you deserved to be. God did didn’t hesitate to open the Pearly Gates to you, Robert. With all my heartfelt love and tremendous respect, Barbara Viscardi xoxo
My deepest sympathies to his family.

Words can’t express how saddened I was to hear of Mr. Harvey’s passing. Mr. Harvey and I worked together at the NAVFAC Norforlk Transportation office. He was the sweetest, and most hardworking man. Always had a story to tell and willing to help if he could. Every time I would visit him in the hospital he would have stories of how well his grandson’s were doing. He was so proud of them and their accomplishments. He will be missed.

My condolences to the family of Mr. Harvey. I met Mr. Harvey 15 yrs ago at Naval Station Norfolk. We worked together everyday as Equipment Operators for the transportation dept of NAVFAC Command. I truly enjoyed working with him. He became a good friend and we continued our friendship after his retirement in 2014. We spoke on the phone weekly. He will truly be missed. GOD BLESS YOU MY FRIEND. Mr. Harvey was such a lovely man. We met him at Jonah’s soccer games and watched as he faithfully came to the games. He was a steadfast supporter at the games. We will miss him at the games but of course, the hardest loss is to his family as father and grandfather. We are truly sorry for your loss and pray for God’s comfort to you.
