My dear Uncle Shelby, you were such a kind and caring man. Even in hard times, you still seemed to look on the bright side. You were such an inspiration to me and others.I still have a message on my phone from you pretending to be Santa Claus that I love and cherish. It makes me happy to know that you are no longer suffering, and you are at peace with the Lord. I will miss you very much and will see you again one day. I love dearly, your niece, Whitney.

You were such a joy to my life my sweet brother Shelby. I will certainly miss our weekly chats and all your humor. You always encouraged me even in the hardest of times. You fought a long difficult battle and never once complained. I will miss your voice, your laughter and will think of you every single day. The only relief I have right now is knowing that you’re in the arms of our heavenly father and in no more pain. Until we meet again rest in peace my brother. Your baby sister Dodie

There aren’t words to fully describe the man, husband, brother, uncle, father, etc. that my grandfather was. His service to the armed forces, his church, community, and family was something to be admired by all. He always smiled, was stoic in times of pain, always lending a hand and kind word to those that crossed his path. He loved deeply and cared for those around him always before himself. He was genuine. He passed on his love for God and his Country to many generations. He was a leader, a teacher, a gentleman, a man to admire. He was my Papaw. The toughest yet gentlest man I’ve ever known. I will miss him beyond words.
