Committal and Entombment

On February 19, 2018, our heavenly Father called Thelma Mary Hayes home.  Ms. Hayes was one of five children born to the late James Ashland Hayes and Maryland Millard aka “Big Mama.”
Thelma Mary Hayes was an alumnus (‘41) and noted business professor at Norfolk State University; a faculty member at the college for over 40 years.  Prior to her tenure at Norfolk State University, Ms. Hayes also taught at Virginia Union University.    Thelma was an dedicated advocate of education as the path to an enriched life. Her personal funding of the Thelma M. Hayes Endowed Scholarship at State University for incoming freshmen in the School of Business reflects her committee to higher education.  Above all, Thelma was a forward thinking woman of substance who provided encouragement and wisdom to all who sought her counsel.  Ms. Hayes’ passion for education couldn’t be any more evident than in her willingness to volunteer in teaching kindergarteners.
A devout Christian, Thelma served as Church Secretary at the historic First Baptist Church Bute Street for many years.  She was a loyal and dedicated member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, The Links of Virginia Beach, the Pinochle Bugs Social and Civic Club the L & J Garden Civic League.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one sister Zelah Marion Hayes Nathan and two brothers, James Hayes and Clarence Hayes.  One sister, Hattie Martha Hayes Wells survives her along with many nieces and nephews.
The Celebration of Life Services will be held at the First Baptist Church Bute Street at 418 E. Bute Street, Norfolk, Virginia at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 3, 2018.  Ceremonial services will commence at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, consider making a contribution to First Baptist Church Bute Street to feed the homeless families in the community.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.altmeyerfh.com.
