Yvonne Christian, 65, died Sunday, July 10, 2016 at her home. Yvonne was born March 9, 1951 in Newport News, Virginia and was a lifelong resident of Newport News.

She is survived by her mother, Ethel B. Foster; two aunts Annie M. Maven and Tiny B. Tyler (Charles Tyler) and one uncle Columbus Stevenson, Jr.; and a host of cousins. She is preceded in death by her father William Carl Christian, her grandparents Columbus Stevenson and Annie B. Stevenson ,and two uncles, Willie Ray Stevenson and Charles H. Maven.

Yvonne graduated in 1969 from Carver High School in Newport News and was a standout basketball player. She started her career at Huntington Ingalls in November 1971. She worked in the office service department until her death, and was a faithful member of the local union. As a 40 plus years loyal service employee, she was inducted into the very elite Master Shipbuilder Club.

Yvonne enjoyed taking pictures, bowling, movies and listening to the “oldies but goodies” music. In addition, Yvonne loved watching football (The Coats) and spending time with her godson, Rodney Peele, her best friends Charles Ramson, Faye Moore, Joann Hinton, and her family.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at Riverside-Altmeyer Funeral Home, 7415 River Road, Newport News, VA.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s association. Friends and family are encouraged to share memories and words of condolences.
