Anna Lee Whitley Wheeler went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 30th at age 98. A native of Southampton County, she was one of three children born to Allen Raymond “Allie” Whitley and Carrie L. Cutchins Whitley on December 29th, 1922.
“Aunt Anna Lee,” as she was known to most, began the first of her many careers by helping her family on their farm near Newsoms. Following the onset of the Great Depression, her family relocated to Norfolk for better employment and schooling opportunities. As a young adult, she worked for a local florist while attending night school to study secretarial work- her studies would culminate into a cherished and lengthy career with VEPCO.
While at VEPCO, she met the love of her life, Mr. Marion A. Wheeler, whom she married on July 22nd, 1950. They enjoyed 58 years of marriage together.
She was a longtime member of Calvin Presbyterian Church, and enjoyed spending time with her family, flowers, fashion, flea markets, yard sales, camping, and traveling across the country. A lifelong artist, she was perhaps best known for her beautiful oil paintings.
She was predeceased by her parents, siblings, husband, son, Mr. William Whitley “Billy” Wheeler, and beloved nephew William Raymond Whitley, Jr. She is survived by nieces Connie Clyburn (Ray) and Merle Martins, great-nephew Gil Clyburn (Tammy), great-niece Gail Settle (John), daughter-in-law Sharon Wheeler, granddaughter Carrie Wheeler (Jamie), grandson Jason Wheeler, and great-granddaughters Brooklyn and Cameron Wheeler.
Please join us to celebrate her life on October 3rd from 6-7:30 PM at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Southside Chapel, 5033 Rouse Dr, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. Burial will follow on October 4th at 11:00 AM at Rosewood Memorial Park, 631 N Witchduck Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23462.
