VIRGINIA BEACH – Our beloved, Barbara J. Callahan, 80, passed peacefully with family on July 6, 2021. Barbara was born in New York, NY to the late Robert L. and Laura Beatrice Willis.
Barbara graduated high school in northern Virginia. She became employed as a secretary with the federal government, took several years off to raise her children, then eventually returned and earned retirement from her Administrative Assistant civil service position. Barbara was a long time resident of the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach. Her many interests included time dancing with the Virginia Beach Shag Club and Stretch & Tone classes at the YMCA. She volunteered with her church, the Virginia Beach voting polls, her neighborhood civic league and a CHKD Sunshine Circle. Barbara proudly was a committed friend to “Bill W” and his associates who all helped her make many positive life changes.
Barbara was predeceased by her devoted husband, Robert C. Callahan, Sr., a brother, Robert P. Willis, and great aunt, Gloria M. Lyon.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving children, Karen Evins (Doug) and Robert “Chuck” Welzant; stepchildren, Robert C. Callahan, Jr., Randy C. Callahan, Ricky C. Callahan, and Debra J. Callahan; sisters, Brooke Hytinen Dunbar, Susan Johnson, Janet Brumby, and Judi Nicolai; grandchildren Michelle and Dustin; great-grandchildren Noah and Dallas; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. Her quiet strength and loving energy will be missed by all that knew her.
A funeral mass with immediate interment of ashes will be held at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church on Thursday, July 15, 2021, at 2 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.altmeyerfh.com.
