Barbara Vaughan West, age 78, passed away on December 16, 2020. Barbara was born on May 16, 1942 in Williamsburg, VA, to A.T. and Mattie Vaughan and was one of nine children. Barbara was a 1960 graduate of James Blair High School in Williamsburg, where she played basketball and field hockey.
Barbara worked for the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in Gloucester Point, VA, in the Facilities Management Department until her retirement in 2008.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, A.T. (“Red”) and Mattie Clowes Vaughan; daughter, Cathy Healy Garrett; brothers: Alonzo T. Vaughan, Jr., Raymond Mead Vaughan and Jack Tazewell Vaughan; and sisters: Elizabeth Vaughan Mingus and Virginia Vaughan Wallace.
She is survived by her husband, William E. West of Newport News; her children: Susan Powell (Dr. David Powell) of Toano, Terri Lynn Cline of Newport News and Cindy Hudgins of Yorktown; grandchildren, Jenifer (David), Jesica (Bobby), Jason (Trisha), Samantha (Shaun), Chase (Ann), Brooke, Jordan and Alex . great-grandchildren: Amari and Alexia Parker, Elena Crespo, Anyá Crespo, Brantley and Maddison Ellis, Bobby and Skyler Wilson, and Easton Ellis; sisters: Joyce Vaughan Robertson, Katherine Vaughan Martin and Margret “Bibby” Salyer all of Williamsburg.
Barbara was a member of Lebanon Christian Church for over 30 years. She was the children’s Director, taught Sunday School, and Children’s Church. She was responsible for the annual Easter Egg Hunt, Vacation Bible School and the Halloween Trunk or Treat. She was also a member of the helping Hands Ladies Group at Lebanon.
A service will be held December 30, 2020 at Altmeyer Funeral Home Denbigh Chapel at 12:00PM. A private burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. In Lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Lebanon Christian Church Building Fund or to the Children’s Church program.
