Betty Grace Ackaway, 87, passed away on May 5th, 2020. She was born in Norfolk to the late George and Sarah McClure. Betty was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, George M. Ackaway Jr. Betty was a long time member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Virginia Beach.
She is survived by her children, Anne Marie Holland, Sidney Hays (Michael), George M. Ackaway III (Daphne) and Daniel L. Ackaway (Lisa); her sisters, Jean Smith and Barbara Serafim; 8 grandchildren, Martha (Beth) Schwartz, William (Tommy) Holland Jr., Kathryn Johnson, Sarah Hays, Christopher Ackaway, Shelby Shelor, George Grayson Ackaway, and Ashleigh Ackaway; and 6 great-grandchildren Eva Schwartz, Rose Holland, Jude Johnson, Ryan Johnson, Everly Ackaway and Autumn Grace Shelor.
A memorial mass will be scheduled for a later date.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Virginia Beach Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center for the loving care extended to Betty these last three years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Childrens Hospital of the Kings Daughters Oncology Department in the name of Betty’s granddaughter, Shelby Ackaway Shelor.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your mom. She was a dear friend of mine of 50 years. There are many memories of our Friday night Bingos, vacations we shared, and the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners our families shared. You will be greatly missed.

Barbara and I are so sorry for your loss. Her presence will be missed at mass. Betty was a hard worker and always remembered her God. What a wonderfully large family to help each other with love and support through these trying times. God bless all of you and we will keep you in our prayers.
