Betty Tapia passed away Sunday, September 3, 2017 at her home in Newport News, at the age of 80.
She was born in Cali, Colombia, and moved with her husband and daughter to Panama. After his death, she remarried and the family emigrated to the United States. She lived most of her life in Newport News, Virginia, with a brief stay of a few years in Florida.She returned to Virginia in June 2016 to be with friends and family. Her husband, Florencio Tapia, a US Army combat veteran, predeceased her in 2001.
Betty was a brilliant homemaker and a hard worker, retiring from the First Baptist Church in Newport News after many years of service. She loved gardening, cooking and knitting in her spare time, and delighted in being surrounded by her many friends and neighbors of the community.
Left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Maria Pilar (nee Munoz) Flaherty; her son, Juan Andres Villarraga; and her grandson, Ryan James Flaherty.
The family will receive friends Saturday, September 16, 2017 from 12-1 pm at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, followed by funeral mass at 1 pm and reception to follow.

Betty, usted a tenido un lugar muy especial en mi vida.Nunca olvidare todo lo que usted hiso por mis y mus hijos. La voy a extranar mucho, pero le doy gracias a Dios por haberla llamado a su lado. y que ya no tiene dolor, tristeza y lagrimas. Que la paz del Senor Jesucristo este con usted siempre. Usted siempre va a estar en mi corazon. La quiero mucho y nos volveremos a ver.
