Beverly “Bev” Swihart Holmes, age 69, formerly of Falls Church, VA passed away peacefully on June 24, 2021. Beverly was born to the late Donald and Dorothy Miller on October 24, 1951 in Batesville, Indiana. Bev was a 1972 graduate of Ball State University, receiving her BS in Business. She then began a long and rewarding career as an associate with the US Dept of Justice, holding several positions including the Executive Office for Immigration Review.  During those years Bev took a sabbatical to pursue her passion for soccer. She worked with the US Soccer Foundation for several years and also volunteered with The DC United Soccer Team. Bev was instrumental in securing grants which led to the funding of new soccer fields throughout the country. To finish out her career, Bev retired in 2019 from the US Dept of Homeland Security.
Beverly loved spending time with her children and grandchildren – she was devoted to encouraging and inspiring them. You could often find her on the sports fields cheering them on (and often times the loudest one) over the years with their various sports.  When she wasn’t on the sports fields, Bev enjoyed simple pleasures such as talking and spending time with family & friends, listening to music, and used her talents crocheting. Anyone that knew Bev, also knew of her love for animals. Bev’s life will remain an influence and legacy which will endure through her family.
Left to treasure her memory are her adored sons, Shawn Swihart & wife Andrea; with grandsons Logan and Austin; Scott Swihart, with grandchildren Angie, Annabell and Erick; brother, Rodney Miller & wife Wendy; sister, Karen Elliott & husband Larry; In addition, by her first husband, Joseph Swihart. Bev and Joe remained committed to being the best parents to their boys. As well as her second husband, Steve Holmes, and many more extended family members and friends.
A celebration of life will take place for Beverly at Altmeyer Funeral Home Maestas Chapel (1801 Baltic Ave, Virginia Beach, 23451) on Friday, July 23, at 11:00 AM. If desired, in lieu of flowers, and to continue Bev’s legacy, the family ask that a memorial donation be made to US Soccer Foundation in Beverly’s name. You can go to www.tmcfunding.com to make the donation or by clicking the link “HERE”.

I just learned of Bev’s passing. Such a great human being. I served in Bush 41 and met her while an ADAG at DOJ. Gone to soon. She and I were children of the Midwest and shared those values each day. I am saddened but thankful to God that we crossed paths here on earth.

Bev was a co-worker, but more significantly an amazing person that I will never forget. She had a great personality and always cared for people. Her deep dedication to serving the nation extended beyond her work and into to the lives of everyone she met. She genuinely wanted to know you and truly listened to what you had to say. She deeply loved her grandchildren and nothing got in the way of her being around them as much as possible. I’ll remember how much she always had my back, always gave me “adult” advice, and wanted to help me grow as a professional and person anytime we talked. Bev, you’ll be missed by everyone you touched here on Earth and know you will be watching over all of us as you always did here. My sincere condolences to Bev’s family for this tragic loss.

I’m so incredibly sad to hear this news. I worked with Bev for almost 5 years at the US Soccer Foundation and from day one she was our “mother hen” always having an answer and a fix-it. She was a welcoming, warm, funny colleague who quickly became a friend over chats in her office, over drinks, and lunch. She spoke endlessly about her boys and their adventures – her true loves. She was a true professional at work and a kind, caring, funny person and friend at heart. The world will be less of a positive place without her loving energy and kindness, sense of humor and energy. And her love of animals. I’m heartbroken she is gone and am sure her boys know how much they meant to her. Truly truly heartbroken. LOVE YOU BEV. 🙁

I am so sorry to hear of Bev’s passing. Bev was the type of person that you never considered just a co-worker, but a good friend. She was always interested in hearing about my kids and seeing pictures, and talking about and showing off her kids and grandkids in return. I could always count on her to answer the phone and help me with what I needed. Bev was truly loved by everyone of our office and I will remember her sunny smile and happy disposition forever. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Beverly was a sweet person to work with and was always willing to lend a helping hand. She loved giving compliments, gifts, and had pleasant personality. I will never forget the day I complimented her on her nail polish and she gifted me the same nail polish the next day. You are truly missed Beverly! Sending my condolences to your family.

Bev was one of the first person I met when I joined DHS ten years ago. She was always positive, and always wanted to help those she dealt with in the State and Local Program Office. She also made a great grilled cheese sandwich!

Myself and others throughout “Building 19” and the homeland will miss her.
