For 65 years, Bob Allen loved generously, nudged with gentle wisdom, shared his quirky wit and made the lives of family and friends warmer, safer, better in immeasurable ways. On June 25, 2020, he stepped into the presence of his Lord. His journey leaves behind a “how-to” roadmap – how to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God.
Bob’s artistic eye and creative bent steered him into the visual arts while he was in high school. He earned a bachelor’s degree in commercial photography and a master’s in filmmaking, first working in advertising and television, then as a Virginian-Pilot photographer for 32 years (BobAllenMedia.com). As a natural mentor, it was his work teaching photo and video students at the Art Institute of Virginia Beach for the past 10 years that returned the most satisfying rewards. He was first and foremost a people person and loved nothing better than sowing into the lives of others.
When your default is mercy and kindness is an instinctive response, your priorities tend to reflect that. Bob valued people over things and his hand was usually the first to reach out in help. For family and friends grieving this abrupt separation, 65 years wasn’t nearly enough. But we are so very grateful for each and every moment we were able to walk through life with him. We learned from him, we laughed with him, we loved him.
Celebrating his life are Annette, his wife of 39 years; Josh, the son of whom he was fiercely proud; daughter-in-love Olivia and granddaughter Evie, both lights of his life; his beloved brother Pete and sister Beth Strohecker; brother/sister-in-law Bill and Ann Green, true siblings of his heart; and a wonderful wealth of nieces and nephews who brought him much joy over the years.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00am Thursday, July 2, 2020, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5033 Rouse Drive, Virginia Beach.
