Carrie B. Stevenson, 84, of Newport News, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, May 6, 2021.
At the early age of 20, Carrie met the love of her life, the late Fred P. Stevenson, in North Carolina where he was stationed serving as a Marine. They married shortly after, leading to her childhood dream of traveling the world. They lived abroad in France and Germany, places she reminisced about daily even years later. She was an extremely brave and fiercely independent woman, raising two beautiful daughters while her husband Fred served in the armed forces. She did everything for her daughters, from making them clothes to ensuring they excelled academically, eventually leading to her daughter Rhonda becoming a school administrator.
Carrie was a beautiful person, inside and out, who loved her family, friends, and neighbors dearly. She relished frequently talking with her next door neighbor, Lee, as well as her cousins Paulette and Julia. Carrie also enjoyed weekly visits from her grandson Parker, who would always bring her fresh flowers. She especially loved her Friday visits that happened without fail from Billy Edwards, who would get her groceries and do anything else she needed. She stayed connected with her extended family and friends, and she took pride in her title of ‘Mom’.
Carrie was preceded in death by her husband and partner of 48 years, Fred P. Stevenson, her daughters Rhonda Evette Banks and April Gail Stevenson-Randolph, her brother William Edward Taylor (known as “Red Buck”), as well as her parents, Peter Batts and Annie Coston. She is survived by her grandson, Parker Allen Banks, and a host of cousins and friends. A service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, in the Altmeyer Denbigh Chapel, 12893 Jefferson Ave., Newport News. Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. on May 15, at the funeral home.

Ms Stevenson… I am going to miss you. Sleep well my dear. Your forever neighbor, Rachial
To my sister Carrie whom I never met in this life: “O Lord, support us all the day long of this troublous life, until the shades lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then, Lord, in thy mercy grant us safe lodging, a holy rest, and peace at the last; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”
Carrie, we look forward to meeting you, by and by, in that better home awaiting in the sky.
In sympathy, Peter M. Batts and Veronica Jackson
