Memorial Service

Catherine (“Kay”) Morgan Stockwell, 54, died on September 13, 2021 in Virginia Beach, VA. The cause was brain cancer (glioblastoma). Kay was born August 18, 1967 in Norfolk, VA to Henry and Marnie Morgan nee McGrail. She attended Norfolk Academy, Duke University, and the University of Virginia School of Law. After graduating from law school, Kay married Dave Stockwell on May 23, 1992. They then lived in New York City for five years and Boston/Wellesley, MA for nine. In 2006, Kay and her family of five moved back home to Virginia Beach. Kay maintained a long and distinguished legal career, culminating as Vice President and Assistant General Counsel at Dollar Tree, Inc. She was active in her community and with numerous charities. She founded the CHKD Oceanfront Circle and, until she became ill, was President of the Norfolk Academy Alumni Board and was a member of the Children’s Health Foundation Board and of Women United and the Tocqueville Society Cabinet of the United Way of South Hampton Roads.
Kay was a loving, thoughtful, and generous wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend. She was so proud of her three wonderful children. Kay was smart, hard-working, and tough when she needed to be. She was also unfailingly kind, humble, polite, and very funny (sometimes unintentionally). Among the many things she loved were ski vacations, New England lakes and summer camps, hiking, debates around the dinner table, novels, and British crime dramas.
Kay is survived by her devoted husband of 29 years, Dr. David H. Stockwell III; her adoring children Henry, Hunt, and Lily Stockwell; loving parents, Henry and Marnie Morgan, and siblings, Rob Hanckel and Coke Stewart; and a host of extended family and friends. Her family is immensely grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of love and support that we received this year from our friends and coworkers. In particular, we wish to thank her dear friends Elliot, Gaby, Audrey, Jennifer, Anne, and Michelle.
A Memorial Service will be held for Kay on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at 11:00 am at Galilee Church, 3928 Pacific Ave., Virginia Beach, VA 23451. Due to Covid-19, we would ask all who attend to wear a mask, and the service will be live-streamed (www.galileechurch.net). There will be a reception limited to the family after the service at the Princess Anne Country Club. Donations in Kay’s name can be made to the United Way of South Hampton Roads (which will be matched by the United for the Future Campaign) by CLICKING HERE, Norfolk Academy by CLICKING HERE, or the Children’s Hospital of the Kings’ Daughters by CLICKING HERE. Condolences may be left for her family below.

Dave I just learned of the death of Kay. I am so very sorry for you and your family. It was evident from the way you spoke of her at work that she was someone extra special. I will pray for all of you to heal and be peaceful. Please consider yourself as getting a big hug from me. Take care my friend.

Dear Dave, Henry, Hunt, and Lily:
I’m deeply saddened to hear of Kay’s illness and passing. Even though we haven’t been in touch in person, I have been staying up to date with your family over the years either via a couple of phone calls to Kay after leaving Boston or via Facebook. I will miss her sweet comments on my posts and sharing with her my fond memories of my short time working with all of you.

Spending the year in Boston, working with your family, was one of my favorite times of my early 20s. Not only was it so fun to be with all of you, I learned life lessons!!

After returning to Indiana, getting married, and having children – I often thought of what I learned from helping care for Henry and Hunt. For example, don’t EVER forget to pack extra favorite sleep/soothing toys for babies! I’ll never forget the phone call from Kay when she was traveling by plane with Henry and Hunt. She frantically asked, “Did you pack an extra doggy?” — I think that’s what we called them (i.e. the red doggies Hunt slept with) — And I said, “No, I just sent the one with you.” Immediately after that response, she shared that she was juggling Hunt and his doggie in the plane’s restroom when all of a sudden the doggie fell in the plane’s toilet!! She kindly shared with me never forget to pack more than one of any item that is used to soothe babies — or something like this could happen — and then what!? Oh, how I felt awful for Kay (and Hunt) because that little red doggie had been ruined. Hunt loved them so much and it would quiet him almost immediately. Thankfully, if I recall, she was able to find a solution — Kay and Hunt were able to sleep.

To this day, although my children are nearly 18 and 16, I still have the girls pack extras of anything that is as important as Hunt’s red doggies!!!

The service on Saturday was beautiful. Sending my love and deepest condolences to all of you. May you find comfort in all the wonderful memories of an amazing mother, wife, friend, and inspiring woman. With love, Kate Ryan Shively
