Cecilia Cobar Goico

February 1, 1931 - October 5, 2018

Cecilia C. Goico, 87, passed away peacefully at noon on Friday, October 5, 2018.  Cecilia was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic to Alida and Benancio Cobar on February 1, 1931.  She grew up in the Dominican Republic, where from pre-school age, she was affectionately raised by Edna Garrido de Boggs and her parents, Don Victor Garrido and Doña Tijides Garrido.  It was there that she met her loving husband, José and married in 1951. In 1960, Cecilia arrived with him in the United States, to build a new life together in the Bronx, NY, West Hartford, CT, and eventually Virginia Beach, VA, where she became an active member of the Church of the Ascension.  Known for her joyful personality, her love of children and dancing, her creative touch with handicrafts, and tireless energy, she directed the Rainbows of Ascension for many years making beautiful handcrafted articles for the Christmas Bazaar, which always sold out.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Liliana García, her son, José Goico Jr. and daughter, Ana V. Cisewski, her daughter-in-law, Anne Goico, her grandchildren Jeremy Goico, Madeleine Goico Hardie, and Sara Goico, her nieces, Denise Foreman and Lilian García-Estefan, and other relatives in the United States and Dominican Republic.

The family would like to thank all of those who have given so much of their time and support during Cecilia’s illness, especially Carole Dicklin, Cathy McArthur and Carole Bouchard.

Funeral services and reception for Cecilia will be held on Saturday, October 13, 1 p.m. at Church of the Ascension, 4853 Princess Anne Rd., Virginia Beach, VA, 23462. Her remains will be inurned at the Church in the columbarium. What our families say...

In my opinion, there is no better facility in Virginia than Altmeyer Funeral Homes. Not only was Chris Sisler there to hold my hand every step of the way, his family members were holding the door on the day of the funeral to help and encourage me. I will never forget their grace. He led me and my family through the process as a personal friend and neighbor, and as the ultimate professional.
