Charles Edward ""Chuck"" Armistead

July 24, 1945 - October 13, 2017

Charles Edward Armistead, affectionately known as “Chuck,” aged 72, of Newport News, Virginia, passed away on Friday, October 13, 2017, at Mary Immaculate Hospital after a long battle with illness. Chuck was born on July 24, 1945, in Camden, New Jersey, to the late Doretta Armistead and Charles Green, and was educated in New Jersey public schools. On December 8, 1963, Chuck married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Cynthia Ann Clark. Chuck and Cynthia were together for 53 glorious years, and their union produced four wonderful children—Carl, Crystal, Carla and Chiri.

Chuck was a beloved member of the Armistead family. All who knew him enjoyed his hearty laughter, colorful language, quick wit, and keen sense of humor. Chuck was a gregarious, larger-than-life-figure, who made everyone around him feel welcome. Chuck always helped those in need and was a role model and mentor to many. In short, Chuck had a heart of gold; he loved people.

For nearly 30 years, Chuck was a professional cross-country truck driver. Throughout his tenure at both Froelich and Consolidated Freightways, he received numerous awards for his outstanding safe-driving record. In addition, he owned two businesses, both under the name C & A Distributors. Chuck was a visionary with an entrepreneurial spirit.

As a young man, Chuck loved adventure. He greatly enjoyed outdoor sports, including hunting, camping, boating, and fishing. He even flew small-engine planes and once, he went white-water rafting. He especially enjoyed cooking; his cuisine was spicy and full of flavor, just like his personality. The only thing Chuck enjoyed more than cooking was eating. He appreciated good food with family and friends. In down times, Chuck took refuge in music, particularly jazz.

Chuck is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Cynthia Armistead and his four children—Carl (Vicki) Armistead, of Norwalk, Connecticut; Crystal (Ronald) Ramsey, of Norwalk, Connecticut; Dr. Carla Armistead, of Stratford, Connecticut; and Chiri Armistead, of Manassas, Virginia. He is also survived by his brother, Stephen Armistead, of Albany, Georgia, his aunts– Katherine Samuels, of Paulsboro, New Jersey, and Amanda Green, of Woodbury, New Jersey as well as two grandchildren—David Ramsey, of Norwalk, Connecticut, and Jennifer Armistead, of Stratford, Connecticut—and one great granddaughter—Elliana Crystal Ramsey, of Norwalk, Connecticut—along with a host of cousins.

Chuck, as the family patriarch, we know that you are now among the great cloud of witnesses. You will be forever loved and missed.
