Charles H. "Buck" Atherton

January 12, 1932 - October 29, 2018

Charles (Buck) Atherton passed away Saturday September 29, 2018 in Virginia Beach, VA.  Buck was born January 12, 1932 to the late Thomas H Atherton, Jr and Eloise Somervell Wickes. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia in Mechanical Engineering, after which he served in the Air Force where he managed the construction of airport runways.

Buck met his life partner, Marcia Frances Keen, in Boston in 1963, while working with the Perini Corporation, building some of our country’s first Turnpikes.  They were married in September 1964. Daughter Natalie and son Tom spent most of their childhood in Chevy Chase, MD.

Buck worked for nearly 40 years at the JF Shea Co, Inc.  During which time he became the first who was neither a president nor an owner of a construction company to receive both the Mole award and Beaver award in recognition of his project management skills in underground and heavy construction.  Besides the countless Boards on which he served, including his favorites at Columbia Country Club, Delray Beach Club, and The Achievement Center for Children and Families, Buck was the biggest fan of his children’s and grandchildren’s achievements on and off the athletic field.

Buck himself was a highly accomplished Tennis player of his time, a national winner as a junior, and in College.  He competed at the highest level well into his 70’s. In 1956, Buck co-founded Tennis, Inc., that continues to be one of the region’s largest promoters of junior and adult amateur tennis.

Buck was brother to the late Alexine Lewin Atherton. He is survived by his wife, Marcia, daughter Natalie, son Tom, daughter-in-law Meg, and his three grandchildren, Hunter (21), Katie (18), and Carter (16), and his two step grandchildren Cailey (23), and Tommy (20).

A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Tuesday, October 2nd at Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club, Virginia Beach.  In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to The American Heart Association in Buck’s honor.
