Christopher Thomas "Chris" Carter

July 9, 1965 - March 10, 2020

Christopher Thomas Carter, passed away on March 10, 2020 in Virginia Beach Virginia. He was born on July 09, 1965 to Ruth Elizabeth Girouard Carter and Norman James Carter in Burlington, VT.  Chris was married to his wife Linda for almost 30 years and was a very proud Dad to his three sons; Charles Carter of Chesapeake, VA, Andrew Carter of Portsmouth, VA and Alec Carter of Virginia Beach, VA. He leaves behind his sister Laurie Turner of St. Petersburg, FL, brother Harry Carter of Burlington, VT and many nieces and nephews across the United States

Chris started his military career with the U.S. Army but later crossed service to the U.S. Navy, wherein he served as a nuclear electronics technician until his retirement from the navy in 2007 after 20 years of service. During his time in the military Chris earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Virginia Wesleyan College during which time he became a published historian who presented papers at universities in Western Virginia.  He went on to complete his Master’s in History from Old Dominion University.

He later worked as a shift test engineer and radiological control analyst at Newport News Shipbuilding before returning to government service under the Department of the Navy at the Norfolk Naval Ship Yard where he helped developed training and later returned to radiological compliance as an auditor.

Anyone who knew Chris will tell you that he was never bored. He was an accomplished guitar and bass player, piano player, model maker, scuba diver, motorcycle rider and wrencher, learned carpentry and wood refinishing, loved tending his roses, and still made time to volunteer two Saturdays a month as a docent at the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach, VA for more than a year. And even though he loved all this, he always made sure to put his family and friends first.

A memorial / remembrance service will be held on March 15, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Altmeyer Funeral Home at 5033 Rouse Dr., Virginia Beach, VA 23462 with reception following the service.
