VIRGINIA BEACH- David Hayden Bowling Sr, 92 passed away November 15, 2021.

David was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Joan Elaine Bowling; his parents James M. and Miriam W. Bowling; brothers James and William Bowling and sister Mary Anne Chandler.

Left to cherish his memory are his brother Robert Bowling; his five children: David H. Bowling Jr, John Kirby Bowling (Dorothy), Mary Kate Morris (Barton), Carolyn F. Davis (William), Janet S. Johnson; grandchildren: Michael (Seville), Matthew, Jon, Catherine (Derek), Victoria, Susannah (Josh), Grace, Laura (Anthony), and Joseph; great-grandchildren: Ruby, Alec, and Cameron and many nieces, nephews and friends.

David was a graduate of William & Mary College (BA), the Naval War College and George Washington University (MS). Highlights of his Naval career include being a Helicopter Test Pilot and Flight Instructor, serving as a pilot on numerous carriers, cruisers & icebreakers in the Artic, Korea, Mediterranean & Caribbean deployments in addition to serving as Commanding Officer of Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron in Key West, FLA. David had a second career as an Internal Auditor for Stewart Sandwiches.

David was a longtime member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, volunteered for Meals on Wheels and helped many Larkspur neighbors with fixing all things mechanical. His hobbies included saltwater fishing, sailing, working on his vintage Triumph & MG cars. His humor, vibrancy & smile will be missed.

Special thanks to Our Lady of Perpetual Help for the extremely kind and compassionate care he received. There are also many special caregivers too numerous to mention that are credited with giving him a quality of life that helped him stay at home before Joan passed.

A Memorial Mass with Military Honors will be celebrated on November 29, 2021 at 10am at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, Virginia Beach *Masks Recommended*. Final rest at Albert G. Horton Jr Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA at a later date. The Altmeyer Funeral Home-Southside Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
