Cynthia "Cindy" Turnbull

June 27, 1954 - March 21, 2021

Cynthia Flake Turnbull, 66, passed away Sunday March 21st, 2021 in Virginia Beach, VA after a long battle against pancreatic and colon cancer.  She was surrounded by her family in the comfort of her own home.  Daughter of Delores O’Connor Flake and Milton Flake, she was born and raised in Baltimore, MD.

Better known by her family as “Mama T” and “Gammie”, Cindy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and teacher.  She had a passion for public education and was an elementary and middle school teacher for over 30 years specializing in Special-Ed Math and Science.  She had a huge heart to serve the underserved.  For over 40 years, she was married to the love of her life, John Turnbull.  Together they had three children and three grandchildren.  She was a loving mother to Doug Turnbull and his wife Khara, Jamie Turnbull, and Tricia McCann and her husband John.  She was a fun-loving grandmother to her three grandchildren Ian, Murray and Levi.

Cindy had a zeal for life.  She was an exuberant personality and had a deep love for people.  She was selfless and always gave of herself before asking of others.  If ever there was an opportunity to laugh or dance, she took it.  Her spunky personality made her the life of any party. Her joy for life, love for her family, strength and determination is what kept her going throughout her cancer journey.

She will have a natural burial this Friday at Duck Run Natural Cemetery in a private ceremony with immediate family.  A memorial will be scheduled at a later date to include family and friends in celebration of Cindy’s life.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to Horizon National, a non-profit learning enrichment program offered to low-income communities.

What our families say...

My family and I are grateful to Angie and the entire Altmeyer team for providing a thoughtful viewing and funeral service for my Auntie. They were kind and respectful through the entire process, listening attentively and carrying out our requests with compassion. Thank you for your help, but most importantly, thank you for your sincerity!
