Danny Hayes Dunn

October 21, 1949 - June 24, 2021

Danny Hayes Dunn, born to Ethelbert and Helen Hayes Dunn in Suffolk, Virginia, on October 21,1949, passed away peacefully with his wife, Ellen at his side, at the Sentara Hospice House, on June 24, 2021.

Danny grew up in the Bay View section of Norfolk and attended Bay View Elementary School, Azalea Gardens Junior High and Granby High School. He graduated from Granby in 1968 and had an amazing wrestling and football career while he was there. The Granby football team were state champions and Danny was a state champion wrestler at heavyweight for Coach Martin. He forged life-long friendships with his teammates that meant the world to him. He was also a member of the high school athletic club, the Ocean View Aces.

After college at Norfolk State University and Arizona Western College in Yuma, Arizona, Danny came back to the area and went into business with his best friend of 58 years, Dickie Trower. They ran the Back Door II in Portsmouth and never ran out of stories to tell about those days. He finally settled into the lawn care business, running Danny Dunn Lawn Care and could be seen, right up to retirement, on his riding lawn mower with his oxygen tank on his back.

He met his wife, Ellen, at a party given by her aunt and uncle, Barbara and Joe Heckel. They had their first date at Zia Marie and the rest is history. They were married on December 17, 2005, at the Lynnhaven Fish House where the only theme was pink. They then moved to their home in Norfolk where the first thing Danny did was paint the front door pink and it still is today.

He is predeceased by his parents and his sister, Patricia. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ellen and their basset hound, Sophie. He is also survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Linda and Dennis Hall, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Scott and KK Proefrock, their five children, Casey, Megan, John, Kate and Charlotte, his niece-in-law and nephew-in law, Dr. Paula Monte and David Monte, their two children, Paige and Parker, his brother-in-law, Richard Eddy, his “aunt and uncle,” Barbara and Joe Heckel, his life-long best friend, Dickie Trower and a host of loving friends.

A celebration of his life will be held at Altmeyer Funeral Home- Southside Chapel in Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made
to the Richmond SPCA, 2519 Hermitage Road, Richmond, VA, 23220.
