Dennis Garfield Tompkins, 72, passed away peacefully into the arms of God while at home and surrounded by his loving family on September 16, 2020 at Sunrise.
Dennis was born in Brooklyn, New York on Christmas Eve 1947. He was raised by his loving parents Mariam and Juan Hernandez who reside in Puerto Rico where he would visit his mother every year for her birthday.
Dennis proudly served his country in the United Sates Navy for 28 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and life member of the VFW 392 – Virginia Beach.
Dennis loved the Lord, his family and friends with all his heart. He loved doing so many fun activities. Some include: traveling, bird watching, coin collecting, dancing, dining out, talking politics, maps, technology and all gadgets, luxury cars, and smoking his cigars. He had a great laugh and sense of humor. He lived a wonderful life! He will be missed so very much.
He was preceded into eternal life by his daughter, Jessica Parham and brother, Raymond Tompkins.
Left to cherish his loving memory is his mother Mariam and father Johnny; brother Gregory Tompkins & wife Hilda; his wife, Pilar M. Tompkins; children – Christine Tuttle & husband Donnie, Veronica Farmer & husband Richard, Michelle Tompkins, Brian Parham & wife Mina, Casandra Tompkins and Tasha Tompkins; 1 niece: Aileen Tompkins; 12 grandchildren: Justin, Moriah, Tsavah, Donovan, Shiloh, Gavin, Logan, Galen, Kole, Ephraim, Ana, Leila, Jessica, 1 great grandchild (unborn) and many other extended members of his family and friends around the world.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 22 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home Southside Chapel (5033 Rouse Drive, Virginia Beach, 23462). His funeral service will take place the following day, Wednesday, September 23 at 1:00 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home Southside Chapel. Military honors and interment will immediately follow at Albert G Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk.

Vi, un cambio en su persona, como de la noche al dia, era un cambio espiritual, interior. En sus ultimos momentos, vi, a Dios en sus ojos, una paz, que inindaba la habitacion entera. Se fue en silencio. Es para mi, un ejemplo, de como, Dios transforma a las personas en incienso agradable que se eleva al cielo. Yo tengo fe, que? igual que? Dios lo transformo a el?, tambien me transforme a mi. Dios vio su corazon grande y humano para todos, por eso perdono todos sus pecados. el dejo un sitio, que?, nadie puede ocupar, nadie. Un hombre que?, ha sufrido mucho, entre otras cosas, la muerte de victimas inocentes en Bietnan. Ha sido, un privilegio, para mi, ver la grandeza y la misericordia de Dios, reflejada en los ojos limpios de Dennis Tompkins, Hijo de DIOS
