Dorothy L. Hampton, 93, of Newport News, Virginia, passed away Thursday, July 16, 2020. She graduated from Huntington High School and retired from self-employment.
Mrs. Hampton was a member of Wesley Grove United Church of Christ in Newport News.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Hampton; parents, Nellie B. Sykes-Wilkes and Charlie Wilkes; her siblings, Charlie A. Wilkes, Herman L. Wilkes, Hugh Randolph Wilkes, Lucy E. Wilkes and Sidney M. Wilkes.
Survivors include her daughter, Dorothea Hampton; her grandchildren, M. Anthony Farley and Kenneth Jerome Hampton; her sister-in-law, Viola Jarrett Wilkes; a host of nieces and nephews; and her long-time friend, Dorothy Farley.

I met Mrs. Hampton when I was working at Newport News Nursing and Rehab. She was a nice person and I enjoyed her company she will be surely missed. To the family she is gone on to be with the Lord. I am sorry for your loss. Keep the faith.
I was so sorry to hear about Ms Hampton’s passing. She was the perfect room mate for my mother during her stay at the Nursing Home. I enjoyed sitting with her and reflecting on what was happening in the world and within the Home. She will be truly missed.
May the Aunt that started me on my Bland Owned Business Quest in 86-87…. I’m going to miss her very much Glad I visited from time to time with my kids and family members before she grew her wings. One of my earliest childhood memories occurred when we visited Aunt Dorothy and her family at their home and businesses in Chester PA. We were amazed at the stores and restaurant they owned, and I was excited when she took us around town. She took us shopping and we later drank water that flowed from a fountain shaped like a lion’s head. I was about seven years old and happy on this adventure.
A day is coming when real, living lions will lie down with lambs. The memory of the lion’s head fountain will be nothing when we all get to heaven. We will feast at the welcome table and drink from God’s Crystal fountain. We pray that when Christ returns, we will all be ready to meet our Lord and Savior in peace, to be reunited with loved ones and to live with God throughout eternity. Until then, let’s live and love like Jesus loves us.
