Ernest W. "Ernie" Owens

July 7, 1935 - July 21, 2019

Ernest  W.“Ernie” Owens Jr., 84, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2019. He grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia, with his five siblings, Marie O., Ted W., James E., Catherine, and Jean O.

He was a member of Rock Pike Church in Bedford for many years.

When he was old enough, he joined the army and received many decorations and medals. Those include The National Defense Service Medal w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster; The Vietnam Service Medal; The Vietnam Campaign Medal; The Meritorious Unit Commendation w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster; The Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation w/ Palm; The Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Good Conduct Medal (1st – 6th award) and The Army Commendation Medal.

After serving 25 years, he was Honorably Discharged and took what he learned and started his own vacuum business. In his free time, he enjoyed collecting coins and stamps and spending his time golfing and throwing strikes at the bowling alley. Ernie was an animal lover who enjoyed his time with his beloved dog, Yogi.

Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Beverly Owens; his wife, Joyce; and his grandson, Jack.

He is survived by his son, Les D. Owens (Laura); his daughter, Sheila A. Carr (Larry R.); grandchildren Larry, Jeremy, Nick, Justin, and Joey; great-grandchildren Brittany, Haleigh, Hayden, Devin, Avery, Riley, and Austin; and his great-great-grandchildren, Beaudin and Oliver.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM, Monday, July 29, 2019 at Altmeyer Funeral Home-Denbigh Chapel, 12893 Jefferson Ave., Newport News, Virginia, 23608.

In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be made to the American Cancer Society.
