Commander Frank Lewis Mixner, USN, Retired, passed away January 4, 2020. Frank was born to Dorothy and Ellis Mixner in Stone Harbor, NJ on June 23, 1942, and has two siblings, Suzanne Stanford and Stephen Mixner.
A career naval officer, Frank was a 1965 graduate of the US Naval Academy, earned his wings at the Naval Flight School in Pensacola, and served as a helicopter pilot in the US Navy. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He also graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterrey, California in 1978.
As a second career, Frank retired from the Virginia Beach Fire Department where he worked in recruitment, training, and accreditation.
Frank married the love of his life, Renee, in 1993.
Frank and his first wife Linda Louise Mixner had 2 daughters, Michele Mixner DeWitt (Chris) and Meredith Mixner Moore (Jeremy) and three grandchildren, Brighton Ellis, Anderson Ayres, and Raleigh Lauren.
In his spare time, Frank loved to golf and spend time with his three grandchildren, especially watching them compete in sports and school activities, and his two dogs Chip and Molly.

I had the pleasure of his company many times with the VBSGC and will miss him at our future golf events . Frank was a kind , gentle soul and will be missed by many . Frank was one of the nicest people I've ever known. He and I shared numerous thoroughly enjoyable conversations as classmates at the U. S. Naval Academy. He is obviously sorely missed by his many, many friends garnered over a life exceptionally well lived. Smooth sailing and calm seas, shipmate.

It is said a man's character can be determined by how he handles golf. Frank was always honest, cheerful and a pleasure to play with. The Virginia Beach Seniors golfers will miss him. RIP

Frank was a revered member of the Virginia Beach Senior Golf Club where he played every Wednesday for the last ten golf seasons. His companionship on the golf course was always sought. He was a great teamate with a positive attitude. We will all miss him. My profound sympathy to Frank's wife and daughters who loved him dearly. By chance, I wondered where I might contact Frank again after so many years. We were in grammar school together and I was in his first wedding, dress whites, swords and all. I was very saddened to see that Google showed me that Frank had passed away. My sincerest and warmest wishes to all his family.
