Freda “Freddie” Nevias Bloch, born in Newport News June 24, 1923, and a long time resident of Phoebus, passed away Thursday evening at her home in Newport News. Freddie graduated with honors from Hampton High School in 1940. She was the first woman to receive a BS in Physics from the College of William and Mary in 1944 and she was then employed at NACA (now NASA) for 44 years until she retired in 1988.
Freda was a lifetime member of B’nai Israel Synagogue, serving on the Board of Governors and Sisterhood and a lifetime member of Hadassah. She belonged to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Colonial Place Woman’s Club and was a volunteer as a Docent at the Virginia Air and Space Center.
Survivors include her son Hunter Bloch and wife, Diane, of Los Angeles; her sister Judith Diamond of Newport News; grandchildren, Matt Bloch and wife, Dawn, of Newport News, and Allison Bloch of Boston, Mass., Andy and Amy Bloch of Los Angeles; two great granddaughters, Hailey and Morgan Bloch of Newport News; three nieces, Brenda Levine of Dover, De., Sherry Liebman of Va. Beach, and Marian Diamond and husband, Ari Tapper, of Fairfax; three nephews, Steve Brown of Norfolk, Larry Druyon of Orange County, CA, and Barry Brown and wife, Sharon, of Florida; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
A funeral service with burial to follow will be held at 2 pm Sunday, January 21, at The Jewish Cemetery of the Virginia Peninsula (1817 Kecoughtan Road). Rabbi Gilah Dror will officiate. Arrangements are by Riverside Altmeyer Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the SPCA.
