August 9, 1936 - September 24, 2020

08/09/1936 - 09/24/2020

George Jalil Moein, age 84, passed away on September 24, in the hospital in
Williamsburg, Virginia from a sudden and brief illness. George was born in Yazd,
Iran in 1936. George came to the United States from Iran in 1955 to attend
school. While he initially planned on returning to his native home, he met a
blonde, blue-eyed girl at school, Jane Gray of Kingsport TN, and decided he would
much rather marry her and stay in the U.S. After graduation, he worked for The
National Geographic Society and the Navy, sailing on ships around the world to
create maps that are still used today. In 1967 he achieved one of his proudest
accomplishments and became a United States citizen. In the 1970’s he was one of
the first employees of the newly formed Environmental Protection Agency as a
leading Environmental Scientist. After retiring from the government, he spent
several years at East Tennessee State University and the University of Virginia
leading environmental workshops. George also led delegations to Eastern Europe
to assist in bringing clean air and water to the region.
George was an avid hiker and bicyclist well into his 80’s and his favorite place on
earth was with his family at their cabin in Roan Mountain, Tennessee. He is
survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Jane, his two children, Christopher
Moein of Tampa, FL and Dr. Soraya Bartol of Norfolk, VA and 4 grandchildren (Kai,
Darya, Baylin, and Coleysia), and his brother Jalal Moin. He is preceded in death
by his parents, Abol Kasim Moein and Sogra Afshar and 3 siblings: Vali Moein,
John Moyne, and Talat Afshar. In lieu of a funeral service, family and friends will
hold a celebration of his life when we all can come together safely.
