Howard Guidry, Sr. USN (RET) of Virginia Beach, Virginia departed this world on March 4, 2021 at his home. He was 81.
Howard was born in Alexandria, Louisiana (Rapides Parish) on October 23, 1939. He is preceded in death by his parents, LC and Stella Washington, his beautiful wife of 57 years Della Guidry, his daughter Dell Monica, his son Howard Jr. and his great granddaughter Zhanay. He is survived by his two daughters Leilani (Kiah) Fields and Leslie Guidry (Mark).
After graduating high school and joining the military, Howard served in the United States Navy for 23 years as a corpsman, served all over the world and retired as a Chief Petty Officer in Virginia. He then worked civil service as a police officer until his second retirement and was still an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Daddy, Papa, Uncle, Brother-in-law, Doc G, Mr. G, and Pops as he was affectionately called, was a master of everything. If you needed something, he was there. If you wanted to know something, he was there. If you had a question, he had the answer. Everyone could count on him to lend an ear, his heart and even a dollar.
Howard was a devoted Washington Redskins fan…his house was covered with memorabilia as well as his car – the same color as his team. He was an avid car fanatic and loved his car shows, car racing, and car repairs/rebuilds. At any given time you could stop by and you were sure to catch him watching one. He loved all types of sports and would program games to watch in between his car shows and historical channels. He especially enjoyed coaching, attending and watching his grandkids play in sports from preschool to college and beyond. Howard was a master on the grill and in the kitchen…anything he cooked was bound to be flavorful.
As an only child, Papa had a large family. Papa leaves 14 grandkids and 19 great grandkids all of whom he had a special, unique connection with. Their bond lives on from his legacy and in their heart. A host of friends and extended family who he called family will sorely miss him, his smile, his laugh, his generosity and mostly his heart.
