Howard Lee Flora, 88, went home to be with the Lord on July 10, 2017. He was predeceased by his wife, June, who passed away December 10, 2016. Also predeceasing are parents, Samuel and Eva Flora and siblings Robert Flora, Helen Jones, Virginia Geusic and Mildred Bland. Survivors include his children, Linda (Marc), Karen (Geoff), Susan and Ray; grandchildren, Charity (David), Wendy (BJ), Will (Whitney), Andy (Emma), Holly (Richard), Danielle (Stephen and her Dad Scott) and Cherie; great grandchildren, Joey, Brittany, Sabrina, Celeste`, Evalee and Jacob; great great grandchild, Karsen. He is also survived by his sister, Ruth of Chesapeake, VA, along with many nieces and nephews.
Howard was born February 13, 1929 in South Norfolk, Virginia. He was a graduate of South Norfolk High School, where he was active in baseball and track and had placed fourth in a district track meet. Shortly after graduating, he was drafted into the army during the Korean War and served nearly two years, where he spent most of his service in Paris, France. He always enjoyed talking about his experiences in France and had learned how to speak enough French to effectively communicate with the French people. In 1956, he married June Rae Roberson, who remained his wife of nearly 60 years until her recent passing in 2016. He was a loving husband and devoted father to his four children. In 1987, he retired from the Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Virginia, as a machinist after over 30 years of service. In previous years, he enjoyed participating in the senior games in Currituck, NC, along with his wife. They were proud of the many medals they received while partaking in the games. He also enjoyed reading his Bible daily. His favorite television show was the “The Price is Right” game show and was able to attend the live show in 2014.
He served for many years as a deacon at Northwest Baptist Church in Chesapeake and taught Sunday school from time to time. He was a current member of Great Hope Baptist Church in Chesapeake. Howard loved the Lord with all his heart and lived his life by the Word of God. His life reflected his strong faith in Christ. Due to his testimony, others came to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

I remember Uncle Howard being a quiet man. He had such a meek and humble spirit. He was committed to Christ and his family. I didn’t see him much after i married and moved away but when I did he was right by Aunt Junie’s side. If ever there were 2 people meant to be together it was them. May Their love for God and family live on through us all. My love to all the family, Annette

Your Dad and Mom were wonderful Christians and parents. I know we will see them again in heaven. May the Lord comfort all of you with the precious memories they leave behind them.

As I write this, I’m watching The Price Is Right as I do every day. I even have a photo of Uncle Howard and Aunt Junie from the show in 2014; they were just a couple of rows behind contestant row. I moved to New Hampshire in 1978 so I rarely saw him but I remember Uncle Howard as a kind man who loved Jesus and his family very much. Though we weep for his leaving us to join his Lord, we must remember that he is never truly gone. He’s always in our memories and forever in our hearts! All my love and prayers to my many cousins.

I remember looking forward to going to my grandparents house for the weekend and church on Sundays. Every summer my grandad would teach vacation bible school, while my grandma would help with us kids and snacks. He was a great teacher and knew a lot about the bible and Jesus. I remember always being so proud to be their granddaughter. They were very involved with the church and I am thankful that they have passed that on to the rest of our family. My grandad was a special man who will always hold a special place in my heart forever. I love you Grandad, I will see you again some day.
