Irvin Williams

March 13, 1930 - April 29, 2018

Sergeant First Class (Retired) Irvin Williams of Newport News, Virginia, died Sunday, April 29, 2018 at the age of 88. He was born March 13, 1930, in Lafourche Parish, Thibodaux, Lousiana, to James and Mary Jane Williams.


Irvin Williams (SFC Ret) served 26 years in the United States Army with two tours in Viet Nam and the Korean War, he received numerous awards and decorations. He later went on to retire from BASF Chemical Corporation and the Department of Defense Military Traffic Command.  Irvin was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Organization (DAV), Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) and the American Legion Post 368 in Newport News.


On September 13, 1956, he married Fumiko Hika of Osaka-Shi, Japan. They were married 52 years until her death in July of 2008. Irvin leaves to cherish his memory, one sister, Essie Mae Young of Thibodaux, Louisiana; an adopted granddaughter, Chante Stubbs of Seattle, Washington;  and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.


He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Delma Ellis, Vera Williams and Anna Mae Celestin; and two brothers, Herman Williams and Robert Williams.


The family will receive friends from 11am to 1 pm Thursday, May 3, 2018 followed by funeral service at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Denbigh Chapel.


Irvin will be laid to rest with his wife, Fumiko, at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, Virginia, at a later date.
