James Lewis Gentry

March 1, 1930 - September 1, 2018

On Saturday, September 1, 2018 at 12:55am, our beloved Daddy, James Lewis Gentry, left this life to return to his Heavenly Home. He was born on March 1, 1930 in Person County, NC and was the first and only surviving child of seven children born to Lester and Elsie Gentry. On September 4, 1948 he married Mary Lorna Roberson and together they had four children; Evelyn Marie (1950-2014), Dan Lewis (1953-1958), Patricia Ann (1956), and Sandra Louise (1957). Evelyn, Patty and Sandy lived to adulthood, but Danny passed away at age 5 from Rubella (German Measles). He worked for over 50 years as the shop manager of American Sheet Metal in Norfolk. Daddy worked 6 days a week to provide a good home for his family and never turned away any family member who needed a place to live. He taught his children how to take care of themselves and to fix anything that got broken. He loved his family, Bluegrass music, good ole country cooking, driving up to Skyline Drive to see the Fall colors, and had a kind and generous heart. His cherished memories will live on through his daughters Patty, Sandy and her husband, Mark and their 2 sons John and Matt, Evelyn’s 2 children, Charlotte and Travis and his only 2 great grandchildren by Charlotte, Vivian and Vinnie. Daddy was laid to rest next to his daughter, Evelyn and his grandson, Adrian on September 4th, the 70th Anniversary of his and Mama’s Wedding Day.

What our families say...

In my opinion, there is no better facility in Virginia than Altmeyer Funeral Homes. Not only was Chris Sisler there to hold my hand every step of the way, his family members were holding the door on the day of the funeral to help and encourage me. I will never forget their grace. He led me and my family through the process as a personal friend and neighbor, and as the ultimate professional.
