James W. Powell

March 27, 1933 - February 9, 2021

Hayes – James W. “Jim” Powell, 87, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2021. He was preceded in death by his wife, Senora J. Powell.

Jim served in the Korean War while in the U.S. Navy and was a Civilian Manager Tactical Air Command at Langley Air Force Base. He enjoyed coaching softball, baseball and basketball, as well as bowling.

He was also preceded in death by his mother, Janie E, Powell; his brother, Thomas Stowe; his sisters, Nell Dodd, Lucille Motley, Virginia Motley, Mary Bray and Mamie Martin; and his great-granddaughter, Avery Jean Powell.

Jim is survived by his sons, Richard A. Powell and wife, Roberta “Robbie” and Dana J. Powell and wife, Stacey; his grandchildren, Kristen P. Spires, Kasey R. Powell, Tyler C.A. Powell, Courtney V. Powell, Jonathan S. Powell, Brittany Peck and Cameron Switzer; his great-grandchildren, Baylor J. Powell, Isla J. Spires, Nora B. Powell, Cayden X. Peck, Sloane P. Spires and Laikyn R. Powell.

The family will receive friends from 2-6 pm Sunday, February 14, 2021 at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Denbigh Chapel. A funeral service will be held 2 pm Monday, February 15, 2021 at the funeral home followed by interment in Peninsula Memorial Park.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org/donate or 213 McLaws Circle, Williamsburg, VA 23185 (757-459-2405).
