Jesse Burnett (Bernie) Collins (78) passed away in his home on Sunday, February 7, 2021 in Virginia Beach, VA surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Washington, NC and predeceased by his beloved parents; Marian Phelps and Leonidas Shepard.
Bernie was a loving and devoted father and husband with a passion for sports, especially football, with a fierce allegiance to his Washington Redskins to the very end! It was quite fitting that he departed this world on the morning of Super Bowl Sunday. In better times, Bernie was also an avid golfer who enjoyed many sunny afternoons on the greens having good times and making great memories with family and friends.
When not kicked back in his recliner watching sports (often with one of his faithful pups on his lap or by his side), he was a hard working man who devoted many years of service to the Southland Corporation, Howells Motor Freight, The Virginian Pilot and Virginia Beach Yellow Cab.
Bernie was a graduate of Washington HS and attended Campell College. He went on to enjoy 38 years of marriage with his loving wife, Trudy Collins and is survived by his 5 children: Debbie Nellis (Robert), Denice Rowlands (Brent), Sharon Toussaint (Greg) by his first wife Nancy; Amber Kemplin (Mike), and Jesse Collins with Trudy as well as his 17 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Parkinsons Foundation www.parkinsons.org
or American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org
) in his name so that others stricken by these devastating diseases may fight and hope as valiantly as Bernie did, allowing his name to live on in hope and love.
A Celebration of Bernie’s Life will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at 2:00pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home-Southside Chapel, 5033 Rouse Drive in Virginia Beach. If you are unable to attend in person, you can view services via livestream by CLICKING HERE.
