John Millar

December 16, 1943 - December 26, 2018

John Millar, 75, of Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at Autumn Care of Norfolk, Virginia . John was born December 16th, 1943 to John Martin Millar and Catherine Atkinson (Finnagan) Millar in the small town of Saltcoats, Scotland.

John came to the United States as a teenager and his fascination with ships led him to the Navy and helped him travel the world doing what he loved. He worked his way through the ranks and after retiring as a Senior Chief , John relocated the family to Virginia Beach, Virginia where he raised his two sons John Jr and Sean while working in shipyards as a Port Engineer. He was well known for his ridgid work ethic and his compassionate heart.

John Millar was many things to many people. He was a proud father, grandfather, brother, Protestant,  teacher to some, friend to many. He was a Scottish Immigrant who loved the United States as much as he loved his homeland. He was truly a patriot.  He was also a cancer survivor and he was a fighter. He battled health issues for many years but the last couple years brought him some of the biggest challenges of his life. He was very well cared for in the end and continued to touch the hearts of everyone he met.

John is survived by his sons, John Jr and Sean, his brother Peter, his grandchildren Jordan and Evan, close friend of the family, Stephanie Flores and many friends  and extended family.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to  the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.

What our families say...

In my opinion, there is no better facility in Virginia than Altmeyer Funeral Homes. Not only was Chris Sisler there to hold my hand every step of the way, his family members were holding the door on the day of the funeral to help and encourage me. I will never forget their grace. He led me and my family through the process as a personal friend and neighbor, and as the ultimate professional.
