Johnita “Kay” Pierce, of Newport News, was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on January 15, 2021, at the age of 77. She was preceded in death by her parents, MSgt (Ret.) John and Lois Hendley; and her son-in-law, Major Raymon George.
Kay was born in Alexandria, Louisiana, while her dad was stationed at Fort Polk. She spent her childhood years growing up in San Antonio, Texas and in Avondale, Arizona. Kay arrived in Hampton, Virginia as an 18 year old when her dad was stationed at Langley Air Force Base. Her family made their church home at Liberty Baptist Church where she met the love of her life, Stanley Pierce.
Kay’s faith and love for Jesus Christ was paramount in her life. She loved to read and memorize scripture on a daily basis. She loved to listen, pray with, and encourage others. She radiated love to every single person she met with her beautiful smile. Kay’s love was shown to her family and friends through her encouragement, prayers and hugs. Anyone who had the blessing to be in Kay’s presence felt loved and cherished. As her firstborn grandson quoted in a post to honor his Nana “I know, FOR A FACT that the one hug that Jesus has been waiting for, He’s finally gotten.”
The way Kay allowed her faith to show God’s love to others made her an invaluable geriatric nurse. She cared for and held the hands of many patients and their loved ones, while most of them were in their “waiting room for God” days. Kay served as a licensed practical nurse for almost 40 years, before her retirement in 1999 at James River Convalescent. She also served at Riverside Hospital (5 East), York Convalescent, and other places in the Hampton and Peninsula areas.
Kay is truly going to be missed by her husband of 56 years -Richard “Stanley” Pierce; daughters, Dawn Bardy (Jack) residing in Newport News, Amy Burgard (Dennis) residing in Ocean View, Delaware; grandchildren, Jonathan Pierce (Jaylee), Iowa, Magin Belliveau (Jay), Amanda Craven (Ryan), and Joshua Throop all residing in Connecticut; her great-grandchildren, Logan Belliveau, Harper Craven, and Evelyn Pierce; and her brother, Doug Hendley (Vivian) and six nephews and nieces.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later time at her church home, Menchville Baptist Church.
